My six month anniversary

Hello all,

This is an unexpected visit. For those of you following West African news, Togo s president died and the military inserted his son as the president rewritting the constitution. African leaders are calling this a military coup. So, yeah, all of this happened lqst weekend. Since I live about fifteen minutes from the border the other volunteer and I called PC on Monday. It is very peaceful in both of our villages, but we wanted to make contact. Anyway, PC said to be careful, which we of course were. So, anyway, Friday night I got a message to come to our workstation. The embassy wanted all volunteers out of border towns, well by the time I got here the embassy realized they perhaps had over reacted a bit and decided to cancel this request. Since, I have no phones in my village I did not get this message until after I arrived here in Nattitangou.

It was alittle annoying to be honest, espectially because this next week is tests and I expect a lot of students showed up to my house or to the library disappointed, but such is life and I guess things like this cannot be helped and in the long run are for my own safety and protection.

This next week will fly by, especially because I will not be teaching, just observing and grading papers. Then, on Friday I head out again to vist and friend and then go to Parakou for our in service training. I will be in e mail contact for a whole week and more importantly see friends I made during trainging who have been off in their own corners of Benin for three months now. Then, three more weeks teaching and then Easter break. It cracks me up how the life of a teacher completely and utterly revolves around vacation. Oh well.

I was also sick for about two weeks, just bowel problems. But, all is good. I am just gearing up for the HOT HOT season which will be in a few weeks and last the better part of two months before the rain comes.

Alrighty, love you all and write again in a week.

Lil Birger - Sure it is a happening place, it is just no college kids no about it. If you are serious let me know. Yes, plane is expensive, but you will spend no more than 200 bucks while you are here and that would be living it up.

Swish - I look forward to the letters. My new address is BP 168 Natitigou, Benin West Africa

Geez, weather! How long is the rainy season? In Peru, it is about three months, but we lucked out because it only rained once while we were there. VERY unusual. Don't advertise too much, or Benin may become the new "Cancun"!!

Annie! Greetings from Greencastle! These last few weeks have flown by because of rush and then I was sick for like a week. Rush went sooooo well...we got 40 new axo babies (we tied with Pi Phi for the most new members). Liesl is now an AXO, so that is very exciting! We have quite a few sisters now (forde, jensen, holland, goecker, and two of the new members are twins!) It sounds like you have really settled into the rhythm of things which is good. I know you may feel bored as you alluded to, but I guess this is the time where the experience becomes your life, and the new adventure aspect leaves. Don't worry, I'm sure there are plenty of adventures left, but the newness is wearing off. It sounds like you are making an amazing contribution to the community and I'm so proud of you! I really don't think I would have the determination and commitment to do it! Just know that you are making a difference, I can't imagine anyone meeting you and not smiling!!! We think of you often here, and Ariane paid tribute to you in the skit during rush (instead of saying she was Nicki Wizinski "the wiz", she said she was Annie Reifsnyder and everyone cheered!) Lots of love!! Heidi
